Nyahururu and Marmanet areas (101,000 inhabitant in 2007) are situated in the South-Western Highlands of Kenya and are growing rapidly. The rapid growth and expansion of commercial and residential infrastructure has led to a high demand of drinking water and appropriate sanitation facilities. Existing facilities were to analyse and rehabilitation and extension measures to identify during the project. Nyahururu and Marmanet were served by the same surface water source and new sources were to develop.

During the studies, following investment measures were defined and later during the project implemented:

Works Contract 1: Water Component, guided by FIDIC conditions of contract, investment KES 791,339,008.00 (6.5 Mio Euro)
  • Construction of 4 drilled wells of approximately 100m depth each.
  • Supply and installation of steel Raw Water rising main of 450mm diameter.
  • Construction of new Water Treatment plant of 13,000 m3/day capacity for Nyahururu town.
  • Rehabilitation of existing Water Treatment Works of 3,000 m3/day for Nyahururu Water treatment works.
  • Construction of 2No. Reinforced Concrete tanks (2,000 m3 and 3,500 m3 capacities).
  • Removal and Replacement of existing A.C pipes of DN≤150mm total to approximately 10km.
  • Supply and installation of distribution network in PVC pipeline (of DN 90mm to 450mm).
  • Supply and installation of DN 100 Upvc24 km long distribution pipeline.
Works Contract 2: 3.1.2: Sewerage Component, guided by FIDIC conditions of contract, investment KES 451,708,024.00 (3.7 Mio Euro)
  • Rehabilitation of Nyahururu sewer network.
  • Extension of Nyahururu urban sewer network.
  • Rehabilitation and extension of Nyahururu sewage treatment works.
  • Construction of ablution blocks complete with water supply system.
  • Rural/ Urban centres sanitation intervention.
